Social Networking Sites
Please be aware that information posted on FaceBook and other social networking sites is for public viewing. It is best not to post information concerning your business, because others may perceive your post differently than you intended.
Remember you need to have written permission prior to placing any pictures of day care children on social networking sites. What you post online is public information and can be shared by others. One often-unforeseen danger of social networking sites is where the information ends up. A name or photo from FaceBook can be taken and used again and again, on any number of websites.
Know that whatever pictures you post, information you add to your site, comments you make on your friend’s sites, emotions you share and schedules you make public cannot be retracted. You cannot recall what you post. Even if you delete the post or even the profile itself someone may still have saved the post or profile on their computer, printed it or shared it with others. Somewhere online, the information is still there.
One major concern with Facebook is the lack of privacy. You supposedly control your privacy settings and have the say over who sees what in your own little space. But be warned that when you share photo galleries with your friends, their friends and associates will also be able to view what you've posted. Facebook accounts also tend to turn up during searches on search engines like google.com. If you're curious to know whether there is information about you on any blogs (including Facebook), performing a search might display some interesting (or disturbing) results.
My point: Be acutely aware of the hazards of Social Networks. Always remember what is possible online. As with most things in life there are opportunities and there are risks. There is never a need to share private confidential information online. Don’t post what you wouldn’t want just anyone to see.
Update from OCFS:
New Law Affecting All Day Care Programs Exciting news! Governor Paterson signed a new bill into law on 6-16-2010 that contains changes affecting all modalities of child care programs. A summary of the specific changes affecting your program and information concerning how the Office of Children and Family Services’ (OCFS) will implement the law is being mailed to all child care providers. In addition, the Division of Child Care Services (Division) is planning sessions with providers to explain the new law and answer any questions you may have. Updated news about these sessions will be posted to the Division’s website soon.
