A child care provider had been caring for children in a licensed child care home for 10 years. He had always had a wood stove which had been inspected and approved. A second woodstove was recently installed; however it did not pass inspection due to changes in code for the barrier fencing. The same barrier had been used around the existing woodstove, and, therefore, neither woodstove could be used until the barrier was altered to meet new codes.

The weather was cold and the provider realized that without heating, he could not provide care for the 12 children enrolled in his day care until the barrier was fixed. This would not only affect his business, but also the businesses of the families of the 12 children he cared for. Parents would need to stay home with their children or scramble to find alternate child care. Businesses would be affected by their employees staying home.

            The provider called SCCCCC for help. He did not have the money to purchase two new woodstove barriers. Grants are available to child care providers through funds raised by SCCCCC. These funds assist child care providers with needed health and safety materials that keep children safe. With grant assistance, this provider was able to alter the existing barriers to meet building codes. Children were able to remain in care and businesses were unaffected.

            The funds donated to SCCCCC provide essential resources to child care providers. Through solutions to health and safety concernsparents do not need to unnecessarily miss work and businesses do not feel the impact of the lack of availability of child care.
